Peekly Data Report

Most Profitable Mobile App Categories in 2026

Peekly ranks mobile app categories by the combined estimated monthly store revenue of their top 100 qualifying listings. Using the same top-100 window for every category reduces the size advantage of broader store categories.

According to Peekly's August 7, 2026 dataset, Games ranks first with $1.8B in combined estimated monthly store revenue across its top 100 qualifying listings.

How the ranking works

Peekly maps App Store and Google Play category codes into 30 comparable category groups. For each group, it selects up to 100 publishable listings with an estimated monthly store revenue above $1,000, then sums those estimates. This top-100 rule reduces bias from category size.

Full methodology and limitations

What the result does not prove

A high category total does not mean every app in that category is profitable or that a new entrant will succeed. The report excludes advertising and off-store revenue, uses estimates, and describes only the qualifying listings currently tracked by Peekly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most profitable mobile app category?

In Peekly's current dataset, Games ranks first by the combined estimated monthly store revenue of its top qualifying app listings. This is a market estimate, not an audited total for the whole category.

How does Peekly compare categories of different sizes?

Peekly uses the same window of up to 100 qualifying listings per category. This reduces the advantage a broad category would receive simply from containing more apps.

Does category revenue include advertising?

No. The ranking focuses on estimated App Store and Google Play revenue. Advertising revenue, web checkout revenue and other off-store income are not included.

Does a profitable category guarantee a good app idea?

No. Category scale is only a starting signal. Builders should also compare competition, growth, ratings, monetization, ads, paywalls and underserved user problems before choosing a market.
